With all the dancing competition shows on TV, ballroom dancing has been making a comeback in popularity. On television it looks so fun and so easy. It really isn't easy but it sure is fun! There are many ways you can learn ballroom dancing: instructional DVD's, lessons and classes.
The Tango is one of the most well know ballroom dance. Known for being very sensual, it usually involves a man and a woman moving very closely around the dance floor. They are usually close at the hips or chest and must be completely in sync with the music and with each other.
A romantic choice would be the Waltz. This dance features flowing, graceful movements done in time. Perhaps you have heard of the 'box step.' This is the fundamental foot movement of the Waltz. In the box step, the man leads by stepping forward with his left foot. Then he moves to the left, then steps back, then to the right and completes the 'box' by stepping forward again. The woman does these steps in reverse. Sometimes this dance is performed to fast-paced music but generally slow music is the choice.
Also a romantic dance choice is the Foxtrot. A slower dance, the steps take two beats of music followed by quick steps that take one beat. From this dance we get 'Slow, slow, quick, quick.' This dance is usually done to big band music but other genres can also be the backdrop.
A very fun dance is the Cha-Cha. This Latin dance is very high-energy and showcases a lot of hip swinging and pulsing. Cha-Cha consists of five steps for each four beats of music. Hence the popular saying 'One, Two, Cha-Cha-Cha.'
There are lots of other dancing styles like the Salsa, Rumba, and Mamba. Some dances have things in common with other dances, but they are all unique in their own ways. It is fun to watch professional dancers who are able to combine more than one style in the same routine.
If you want to really learn ballroom dancing, watch people in action and follow-up by viewing some DVD's or video tapes at home. But really the best way to learn is by taking classes. This gives hands-on experience that you can't get from videos alone. Take your partner and head off to a class. If you don't have anyone who is interested in going with you, that's no big deal.
