How To Choose The Right Dance Class

By Peggy Ryersen

Learning how to dance is a lot of fun and a great hobby, but only if you choose the right dance class to attend or otherwise you won't be getting the most out of your lessons. When choosing a dance class there is much you have to take into consideration. Not only is the dance style important, but also the quality of instruction which has to be high if you want to really learn and master a particular type of dance.

First and foremost you have to find dance lessons in your area that teach the style of dance you want to learn and if you haven't yet decided upon a style, then you have to look into the different options available. It is even worth sitting in on some classes to see what goes on. This is helpful since you get to see the dancing itself and the instruction style. This will help you in the end to choose a class.

After looking into classes you also need to take into consideration the length of a class. Classes that are too short will not give you sufficient time to learn techniques and perfect your dance. The ideal class length is one hour and depending upon style of dance being learned, the class can go on for several weeks or even months. It is important to be able to commit to a class and therefore, you should choose one that fits into your schedule.

The class skill level is something you have to keep in mind and generally you will have to choose from beginner classes up to advanced level classes. Always choose the appropriate level and if you have never done a type of dance before, then go with the beginner class so that you can learn all the fundamental techniques. Afterwards you can always move on to more advanced courses.

You shouldn't forget to learn about the instructor, either. You should look for an instructor who is skilled and is a good teacher. Not all people who are good dancers can also teach others well and that is why it is important to observe a class before signing up. By sitting in on a class you have the opportunity to see the instructor's teaching style and decide if you like it or not.

After choosing an instructor and narrowing down your class options, you have to find out just how many others are going to be in your class. Small classes are the best, because the instructor will have more chance to spend individual time with you. As a general rule, the classes with the fewest students are the best.

After choosing and enrolling in a class, you have to make sure that you don't miss any lessons. Each class has to be attended or you will quickly miss an important lesson and then it will be hard to catch up to the rest of the class. In dance this is especially true since the lessons are almost always based on a building style of teaching. This means that each class is setup according to what was learned during the last lesson and that makes it harder to progress and keep up with the class if you miss something.

Most important is to just have fun at dance class and take to heart all the advice and criticism given to you by the instructor. It is meant to help you become a better dancer of your chosen style and even when out of class keep practicing. - 29874
